Past Times: Caribous and Caves

Ice Age era caribou remains spotted in the Valley

Date: 10,000 BCE

During the last Ice Age, residents of the Hudson Valley traversed the region in search of caribou. Millennia later, caribou bones, fluted points, and stone tools were found in the Dutchess Quarry Caves. At the time of archaeological discovery in the 1960s, the caves represented the oldest find in the Eastern US. Today, the caves are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
