Partners in Time

Eight local couples in the food industry take us through the peaks and valleys of working and living together.

A loving couple conceive a business venture, turn it into a reality, and toil side by side. Dream job or disaster? To find out, we spoke with eight couples in the Hudson Valley who are both life partners and business partners in the food industry. The truth is, most disagree with the conventional wisdom, which maintains you shouldn’t take work issues home with you. “Having a business with your spouse is all-consuming, but, ultimately, you want to share it with each other, good and bad,” says Sarah Suarez of Gaskins, the new restaurant in Germantown that she and her husband, Nick, own together. “You can’t escape it, so why try?” laughs Kevin Reilly, chef and co-owner of Roost in Sparkill.
