Kids spend all year pining for summer. When it finally arrives, they complain endlessly of boredom. Camping keeps them entertained, but only for awhile. After all, few are content to sit around the fire for long. Add these activities to your summer bucket list to keep your kids happy.
Rte 9W North, Bear Mountain
Kids of all ages adore Bear Mountain State Park, as do their parents. There is no shortage of outdoorsy activities at this Hudson Valley gem. Start by observing bears hanging out in their den at the Trailside Zoo, which also houses foxes, beavers, and coyotes. Afterwards, marvel at hand-painted scenes on the park’s beloved merry-go-round. Don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch. Top spots for picnicking include Hessian Lake and the benches near the river. At sunset, take in gorgeous views of the Hudson River on the Bear Mountain Bridge.
51 Rte 100, Katonah
An integral component of the Westchester County Parks system, Muscoot Farm is free to the public and open most days. Meander with your kids along five miles of trails or visit with dozens of farm animals. The farm regularly hosts special events throughout the summer. Stop by for movie night, guided hikes, or magic shows. Young children adore morning chores programs, which provide an intriguing glimpse into the everyday life of a farmer. Visit on Sunday afternoon for a relaxed hayride and bring a picnic lunch or purchase seasonal snacks at the concession stand.
75 N Water St, Poughkeepsie
If rain strikes during your springtime outing, hurry inside to the Mid Hudson Children’s Museum. As the Hudson Valley’s only children’s museum, this top destination encourages youngsters to learn through exploration. Hands-on exhibits cover science, math, music, art, and literacy. Kids can burn up excess energy with gigantic blue blocks at the Imagination Playground or while playing pretend at RiverTown. Visit the Children’s Garden to connect with the natural world and learn more about growing your own meals.
We spent a good part of the day at The Castle in Chester, NY, go karting and rollerblading. I packed a ton of GF snacks because I assumed nothing would be safe for someone with celiac. Much to my surprise and delight, their small kitchen had a dedicated GF fryer, GF hamburger buns and GF David’s cookies and brownies. When I told the gentleman behind the counter how thankful we were, he told me that his son has celiac and that’s why they do what they do. We will be back. #celiac #celiacdisease #glutenfree #glutenfreeliving #glutenfreelifestyle #castlefuncenter #glutenfreebergencounty #glutenfreefun #glutenfreenewyork #glutenfreenewjersey
