Out of this World

An art exhibit brings this odd ball to a city waterfront

Where in the Hudson Valley…?Reports claiming extraterrestrial sightings have been heard around these parts for years. Surprisingly, this unusual globe doesn’t explain any of those strange glowing lights some people claim to have seen passing through the sky; it’s a sculpture installed on the waterfront of one lower Valley city. The piece is part of an art exhibit celebrating last years’ Quadricentennial and the region’s Dutch heritage. The curious rust-colored orb looks like it should be carrying little green men. The only alien objects one sees inside it, however, are pennies: collected from countries around the world, the coins are glued to the sculpture’s purple walls. Most of the outer protrusions — which resemble beverage straws poking out of an orange — are kaleidoscopes made from PVC pipe. A glimpse through them shows intricate designs of letters and shapes; one “straw” is actually a telescope.A nearby plaque tells a bit about the young Dutch artist who created this installation. His work has been featured in Manhattan galleries before, but this is his Valley debut.Think you know where to find this spherical structure? Send us your answer as a comment. The first reader who gets it right wins a prize. (Brownie points if you guess the name of the art exhibit.)Good luck, Earthlings!
