October Nibbles

News and notes from the Valley’s dining scene

Save a historic building while having a blast at the 4th Annual Kimlin Cider Mill tasting. It’s free to take a tour, watch a cider-pressing demo, and enjoy the live music, but for a mere $10, you’ll also get a souvenir tasting glass (first 400 attendees) and a chance to sample a plethora of local hard ciders. Fall is fungi season, and ’shroom farmer Dan Madura offers exotic varieties like Maitake (hen of the woods), Oyster, Pioppini, Lion’s Mane, and Beech at the following farmers’ markets until November: Cold Spring, Chappaqua, Irvington, and Pawling. Make sure to ask him for cooking tips!

Plated is a contemporary but cozy bistro serving a quirky appetizer-and-entrée in one: The Planted Burger comes with waffle fries, American cheese, bacon, mozzarella “rustica” sticks, and chicken wings. (2425 Route 52, Hopewell Junction; 845.447.1700)

Famous for its $25 bottles of wine (a bargain in a top-rated, cash-only spot like this one), Endcut has also been drawing raves for its extras like a bread basket brimming with homemade pheasant rolls and focaccia, and small plates of palate-cleansing grapefruit sorbet served between courses. (5 Church St, New Paltz; 845.633.8714)
