This National Lipstick Day, Find the Perfect Shade for Every Occasion

A local makeup artist shares her favorite shades, so you can save yourself from endless swatching.

This Saturday (July 29) is National Lipstick Day, and what better way to embrace the classic beauty product with a new tube or two? But finding the right shade for you and your lifestyle can be far more difficult than a quick drive to the Poughkeepsie Galleria. We enlisted the help of local makeup artist/expert Meredith Hayman for some advice on what shade to rock and when. Here’s what she had to say:

What lipstick would you recommend for day or work wear?

A perfect everyday lip color is your natural lip enhanced. I would go with a long wear moisturizing formula.

Product Recommendation: It Cosmetics Vitality Lip Flush 4-In-1 Reviver Lipstick Stain, Rose Flush – $20, Ulta

What type of shade is ideal to wear to a job interview?

- Partner Content -

I would find a long wear creamy formula in 2-3 shades darker than your natural lip color.

Product Recommendation: Too Faced Melted Matte Liquefied Long Wear Lipstick, Suck It – $21, Sephora

How about evening/party wear?

A great way to bring your day makeup look into nighttime is with a pop of color on the lip.  A sheer wine looks great on everyone and it’s more forgiving and easier to apply than a matte.

Product Recommendation: Wander Beauty Carryon Lip and Cheek Gel, Rosy Red – $22, Sephora

What’s a good lipstick shade to wear on a date?

Go with a kissable formula that makes your lips look healthy and hydrated. You don’t want your color to come off on your date or be too bold that it will deter that end of night kiss!

Product Recommendation: The Body Shop Coulor Crush Lipstick, Hot Date 335 – $6.25 (at time of publish), The Body Shop

What’s your favorite summer shade?

Poppy pinks and corals are always good for summer and look great with a tan.

Product Recommendation: Urban Decay Vice Lipstick Sheer, Snitch – $17, Ulta

What’s your go-to lipstick? Yes, you can only pick one!

One of my favorite long wear brands is Stila Liquid Lipstick; it’s a weightless formula that stays on all day. A universally flattering pink is “Patina.”

Product Recommendation: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, Patina – $13.20 (at time of publish), Ulta

Is there a lipstick shade that never goes out of style?

The right nude lipstick never goes out of style. A pink undertone is more flattering than a brown undertone. Look for one that is 1-2 shades lighter than your natural lip color.

Product Recommendation: MAC Lipstick, Fleshpot – $17, MAC
