Fashionistas, rejoice! Marist College’s fashion program once again put forth an outstanding display of on-trend, original student designs at its 28th Silver Needle Fashion Show.
Marist’s 2014 looks excellently balanced creativity and practicality. Trendy athleticwear for the gym? Check. Structured, office appropriate pants and sharp blazer combos? Check. Versatile maxi skirts to dress down for a lazy Saturday morning and dress up for date night? Check.
The student designers covered many of the dominating looks from 2014 Fashion Week: Crop tops appeared in several senior collections, prints had tribal inspirations, asymmetrical neck- and hemlines abounded, and sheer fabrics gave off an alluring, but also tasteful, vibe. And we’ll never know if last year’s blockbuster Frozen made whites and creams de rigueur again or if the classic color is making a comeback on its own, but several students incorporated the neutral hue into many of their looks.

HV’s Top Looks
Assistant Editor Rosemary O. Fernandez:
Forrest Simms’ luxurious, Egyptian-inspired collection exudes class and elegance. His paneled, flowing maxi dress with a hand-beaded mantle collar would have for sure found its way into Cleopatra’s wardrobe.
The Marist Brand’s collegiate line would be a hit on any campus. With a wide range of T-shirts, polos, hats, and jewelry, the comfy clothes artfully display Marist pride while also being cool enough to wear to class without being labeled a dork.
Digital Editor Jessica Friedlander:
Kudos to the senior designers whose garments, as Fashion Program Director Radley Cramer remarked prior to the presentations, were hand-dyed, -beaded, -printed, -stitched — and whatever other combinations of sartorial techniques arepossible. Lauren Marsiglio’s pieces in particular were top-notch, with a seductively Victorian feel: tiered silk skirts, corset bodices overlaid in scalloped lace, and straps of leather (a nod to steampunk, perhaps?) completed the moody collection. It’s no wonder her first piece — a printed-patchwork number with cap sleeves and a flounced bottom — nabbed the award for Best Garment.
Not to be outdone, Brittany Morganti’s quartet of embellished outfits paid tribute to two eras (and might we add, the best ones): the 1920s, with a drop-waisted fringe dress and owl-sequined crop-top-harem-pant combo; and a pair of 1980s party dresses with poofy skirts, sweetheart necklines, and neon pink and purple hues. And sparkles — sparkles everywhere.
