Hudson River Exchange Summer Market Unites Craft Artisans With Locals For Third Year

Local vendors sell handcrafted goods at the third annual Summer Market in Hudson

What goes hand-in-hand with summer besides seasonal fare and a wide-brimmed hat? You guessed it: outdoor markets! For the third year, Hudson River Exchange organizes its Summer Market, where locals and people from all over the region flock to Hudson to buy handmade goods, find one-of-a-kind vintage pieces, munch on delicious food, and listen to live music.

The Summer Market was founded in 2013 by Hudson-based photographers Kate Moore and Kate Sterlin, and graphic designer and illustrator Stella Yoon. Their mission? To promote and expand small businesses in and around the Hudson area, and connect them with their consumers — “basically get [them] out of their studios where they are kind of working alone, and start to collaborate and meet with people that want to buy their things,” says Moore. This year, a whopping 100 vendors — including non-profit organizations and those selling hand-crafted goods and artisanal food — are slated to appear.

But not just anyone can become a vendor. “We are looking for people who produce and design their own products and pay particular attention to their own style, to level of production, to sustainability,” says Moore. “[We’re] looking at the quality of the design and the production.”

The response from the community has been largely positive. “The first year, we had about 800 people and last year, we had 2,100,” says Moore, who expects between 2,000 and 3,000 attendees this year. “We’ll keep our fingers crossed!”

Since its inauguration, interest in the event has skyrocketed among businesses. The founders plan to launch their first membership program, called #creativitylovescompany, in July. The program aims to bring local entrepreneurs together, giving them a unique opportunity to get recognition locally and network with others.

The Summer Market will take place June 27 and 28 at the Hudson Riverfront Park in Hudson. There’s free admission and easy access to Hudson’s Amtrak station.

Can’t make it? Don’t worry: the Hudson River Exchange also organizes a series of trunk shows and farm and flea markets throughout the summer and fall. Visit www.hudsonriverexchange.com for more information on upcoming events.
