Have you ever wondered where the town of Coxsackie got its name? No, not from the “hand, foot, and mouth disease” of the same title. (Actually, it’s the reverse: the virus was named for the town where it was first discovered.) Rather, the name “Coxsackie” is a Native American word that translates to “home of the hoot of the owl.” Now, to celebrate its heritage, Coxsackie is hosting its first What a Hoot! Festival, where more than 50 three-foot-tall owl sculptures have been decorated by artists and installed in a public art display and charity event.
A gala on Sept. 30 concludes the festival, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Village of Coxsackie. The sculptures will be auctioned at the gala, and the proceeds will go to the Coxsackie Food Pantry, Friends of the Library, Sleepy Hollow Helping Hands, Coxsackie PAL, and C-A Scholarship.
