New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy greets admirers at a Democratic rally in downtown Newburgh in October 1965. The future presidential candidate also visited Newburgh Free Academy, Orange County Community College, and Stewart Air Force Base during his visit to the city. His son, long-time Mt. Kisco resident Robert F. Kennedy Jr., would spend much of his life fighting to protect the Hudson River as a member of Riverkeeper and the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic.
The Mid-Hudson Bridge opened in 1930, but Poughkeepsie’s Brinkerhoff Ferry managed to stay afloat for eleven more years by charging passengers 25 to 50 cents less per ride than bridge authorities charged motorists per crossing. When the bridge toll fell to 35 cents during the week of Christmas of 1941, the ferry was out of business by New Year’s Day.
The Bear Mountain Bridge may not have looked like much during construction, but the span held the title of world’s longest suspension bridge upon its completion in 1924. Bear Mountain was also the first suspension bridge in the world with a concrete deck and the first cross-Hudson bridge between Albany and New York City. Today, the bridge is somewhat overshadowed by the Mid-Hudson and Newburgh-Beacon bridges, which receive roughly twice and four times as much annual traffic, respectively, as the Bear Mountain bridge does.
