The fourth annual BrewFest on the Farm, held at Penning’s Farm in Warwick on May 30, will feature a four-hour tasting session of products from more than 30 craft breweries, as well as food and live music. Rushing Duck, Peekskill Brewery, and Keegan Ales are just a few of the local breweries that will be represented.
A beer fest on a farm is not that odd, particularly when you consider that owners Steve and Jill Pennings, who have owned the farm since 2000, started growing hops on one acre of their property several years back. Today, they produce five different varieties; some of them are bought my local brewers like Chester-based Rushing Duck. But hops is just one part of a broad range of activities offered on site. In the last 15 years, the husband and wife duo has spruced up the 100-acre land by including an apple orchard, an ice cream stand, a beer garden, and the Pennings Pub & Grill, which is open seven days a week in the summer. Steve says it is important to him that there would always be something for people of all ages to enjoy. “Our goal is to be family oriented,” he says. “We want older families with adult children or multi-generations to be able to come here and have a good time.” The next big thing to hit the farm? Pennings’ own hard cider, made from the orchard’s apples, should be available in April or May of 2016.
