Memorial Day Parades, Exhibits, and More

How to spend Memorial Day 2014

Pay tribute to those who have served — and those we’ve lost — by attending one of these local parades this Memorial Day weekend:

Friday, May 23-Monday, May 26

Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum Memorial Day Weekend Events
In honor of America’s veterans, the FDR museum hosts its annual USO show at 7 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, guests can explore a recreation of a World War II encampment as well as a display of military items. A graveside memorial service rounds off the festivities on the 26th at 1:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 25

Town of Newburgh Memorial Day Parade
Memorial services begin at 10 a.m. at the Newburgh Town Hall; the parade kicks off at 1 p.m.

Monday, May 26

Stony Point Memorial Day Parade
In honor of local veterans, a service will be held at Rose Cemetery at 8:30 a.m.; the parade kicks off at 9:30 a.m.

Downtown Albany Memorial Day Parade
Beginning at Partridge St. and Central Ave., the parade winds through the city and ends at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Lafayette Park for a ceremony to honor our veterans.

Historic Huguenot Street Memorial Day Community Commemoration
Stop by between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and help decorate the DuBois Fort lawn with American flags, which are available in the Visitor Center.

Memorial Day Reading

If you’re in the mood to stay in and enjoy a book this weekend, check out the new historical novel Flowers of Iowa by local author Lance Ringel. Set in France during the final months of World War I, the story details a relationship between two soldiers.
