Marist College Is Expanding Into NYC

Plus, the school announces new developments in Poughkeepsie.

Big changes are underway at Marist College. This coming academic year, the school will welcome not one, but two additions to its campus.

In fall 2018, a new building will open on the Poughkeepsie site. The 36,000-square foot space will serve as a home for the Fashion Program and the Department of Art and Digital Media.

“Designed by Robert A.M. Stern architects, it incorporates brick, steel, polished concrete, terrazzo, corrugated metal, tile, and wood to achieve a Hudson River Valley industrial-modern style,” says Julia Fishman, director of media relations at the college.

Not only will the site be architecturally impressive, but it will be significant on the academic front as well. With an expanded studio space that includes digital labs, a maker space for advanced 3-D and large format 2-D printing, a student-run boutique, and an entrepreneurship lab, the hub will aid the development of the fashion and media programs at the school. On top of that, an interior garden with a café and gallery will serve as a creative, relaxing destination for students and faculty alike.

During the second semester, in spring 2019, Marist will cut the ribbon on its new New York City real estate. In a statement on Wednesday, June 13, the college announced its purchase of the entire 14th floor of 420 Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan. The Big Apple location, which amounts to an impressive 18,000 square feet, will house the Marist College Executive Center and function as a central location for adult, corporate, graduate, and undergraduate offerings.

“The premier New York City location will allow for expansion of a wide variety of programs, including the very popular Marist in Manhattan internship program and the School of Management’s Career Trek, which connects business students with potential employers in New York City,” the statement declares.

Conveniently, the NYC outpost will function as a resource space for Marist students participating in New York Fashion Week, for the Marist Poll, and for alumni and networking events.

For a college that opened its doors in 1929, the new expansion announcements suggest that the best is yet to come.
