Dr. Marc Rappaport, a board-certified medical oncologist, strives to prevent cancer by highlighting the link between head and neck cancers, cervical cancers, and Human Papillomavirus. Refuting the myth that head and neck cancers only strike “smokers and drinkers,” he promotes HPV vaccinations as a line of defense.

What are the rewards and challenges of your specialty?

Cancer management is beset with ups and downs, good and bad days; but there’s a general sense of accomplishment. For me, the key is establishing trust; being down-to-earth; and formulating a plan together with the patient. That’s how I put patients at ease, even those who come in with major anxiety.

Which breakthroughs in breast cancer treatment excite you?

We have exciting new treatment options, including targeted therapy pills and new agents for estrogen-positive breast cancer patients who have metastatic disease. We’re on the verge of new therapeutic drugs for the triple-negative breast cancer patient population, who tend to be younger. And we recently updated guidelines to suggest more patients — even those with only distant relatives diagnosed — are eligible for genetic testing.

What is something interesting about you?

I’m a cancer survivor myself — 14 years in remission. I’ve been the patient sitting in the hallways, waiting for answers and results, and it’s opened my eyes. I totally empathize with my patients during their ups and downs, and that makes me a special kind of oncologist.

Can you share a patient success story?

My 68-year-old patient was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was actively dying. I sent his tumor out for testing and found he was a strong candidate for immuno-therapy. He’s now in complete remission! He gained back 50 pounds and feels he has a second life.
