Where in the Hudson Valley…?
Readers sure know their apples from their oranges. We received dozens of responses about the “Apple Rock” on Route 212 in Woodstock, which commemorates New York’s popular Jonathan apple. Also known as “The Rickey” (named for Philip Rick’s farm, where the apple is said to have originated), this flavorful fruit is sure to make a yummy candied treat this season. The “Apple Monument” is dear to my heart because, back in 1987, I was part of a local group that celebrated Woodstock’s 200th birthday by making a bicentennial quilt. Each square represented a local landmark — my square was the apple monument. It’s not a Delicious, but it is delicious!

Looks like our “Best Of Hudson Valley” issue (October 2008) got the best of us: Brotherhood Winery, this year’s winner for Best Port, is located in Washingtonville; and snow bunnies can find Belleayre Mountain — ranked by our readers as one of the top ski destinations in the Valley — at Highmount in Ulster County, not Greene County.
