Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Write to us: edit@hvmag.com

The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall offers its stage to some of the world’s most acclaimed acts (like, for instance, the Canadian Brass — see our “Holiday Happenings” listings for information on its appearance there this month). It also lends its likeness, in the form of a magnificent mural, to a brownstone across the street from it. The 40-by-80-foot painting, which features the hall’s iconic pipe organ and chandelier, was completed by local artist Kevin Clark this summer — and duly spotted by contest winner Michael Fiorisi of Poughkeepsie. Test your baseball knowledge here: can you name the Valley hometown of a Hall of Famer rumored to have hit “the longest home run ever?”

Bitter taste

No doubt your top dentists (“Top Dentists,” November) advertising sections are a big success, based on their growing size and repetitive nature. However, I must wonder how many dental offices in the Valley have removed your magazine from their waiting rooms. I suppose there is a downside to everything.
Sincerely yours,
One of the Inferior Dentists
Gene DeStefano, D.D.S.

Voter vents

Your biased coverage of the congressional election (“Voters Choice,” November) is disappointing. Congressman John Hall gets no space two weeks before the election. You say go to an article published in 2006! It is very sad that you don’t give him an opportunity to tell his constituents what he has done for his district.
In your coverage of Greg Ball and Michael Kaplowitz, I don’t think anyone should agree with your assertion “there isn’t much daylight between the candidates’ platforms.” If you do political reporting, be fair and balanced. I guess that’s not the intent.

You would have been more honest had you endorsed Nan Hayworth instead of giving her all that profile coverage. Yes, you included a photo of John Hall and a sentence which says that he was profiled in October 2006. To have run this amount of coverage in November is a tacit endorsement of Hayworth. Why be so surreptitious? In the future, if the magazine wants to endorse someone, at least give the reading public some facts and say you are endorsing the candidate. By the way, what will happen to her practice once health care comes? What will happen to her tax bracket if taxes are lowered?
You dumbed down the whole election process with this feature. I was waiting to read if she would be asked what her sign is and what her favorite color is. What lame questions!

Editors’ note: Hudson Valley does not endorse political candidates, either directly or otherwise. We chose to profile Nan Hayworth because she is a relative newcomer on the scene, and our readers may not be familiar with her. Four years ago ran a four-page article on John Hall, as that race was the big story that year. And, naturally, we received letters from several irate Republicans.

Mission accomplished

Thank you so much for your wonderful magazine. It’s great that this magazine covers all the many things to do in the area: the excellent restaurants, theater and arts activities, and so much more. We’re truly blessed to live in such a beautiful valley with its wonderful river, Catskill Mountain views, and tremendous history. Keep the great articles coming!

Letters from L.I.

“Magazines: The Power of Print” (November) was more than an advertisement. Most American cities and suburbs are down to one local newspaper and one monthly magazine. Newspapers and magazines have to deal with increasing costs along with reduced advertising revenues and declining readership due to competition from the Internet and other information sources. The growing population of immigrants supports their own newspapers, magazines, radio, and television stations.
We are fortunate to live in one of the few remaining free societies, with a wealth of information sources available. Let us hope that newspapers and magazines, including Hudson Valley, will continue to survive as a valuable information source for citizens to access. Patronize those businesses that advertise in Hudson Valley. Their advertisements help cover magazine costs. This holiday season, enlighten a neighbor and give a gift subscription.
