Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Love it or hate it — everyone seems to know all about the imposing Palisades Center Mall that towers over I-87 in Rockland County. Apparently, many of our readers are also well aware of the little cemetery that is tucked away right next to the megamall (and which was pictured in our September issue). But it takes more than just fashion sense to know that the graveyard situated near the Target store at this West Nyack shopping center is Mount Moor Cemetery, the burial grounds of African-American soldiers from long-ago battles. Congratulations to Cathy Imburgia of Highland Mills for being the first to correctly identify the location of this historic place. This month’s quiz is sure to have readers picking their brains.

Despite being surrounded by the large mall (supposedly the second largest in the country), parking lots, and ring roads, the cemetery still is able to maintain a peaceful setting.

This cemetery was located behind Janet Hogan’s Diner; I remember the troubles stirred up when the builders wanted to move the graves.

Get Your Fix

A client who recently brought a framed oil painting to us for restoration work mentioned that he learned about our restoration services while visiting his dentist’s office last month. He picked up the December 2007 issue of Hudson Valley magazine while waiting for his appointment, which featured “Where to Get Things Fixed,” and read about our painting and picture frame repair and restoration services. Thank you so much for featuring us in that issue. We received many inquiries immediately after that issue came out and in the months that have followed.

An Educated Decision

We read with great interest the article titled “Public vs. Private High Schools” (August 2008), and agree that the issue of public vs. private schooling really comes down to an issue of choice. There is no single school (whether public, private, or independent) that is a good fit for every child, as each student has unique learning needs and responds differently to a particular learning environment.
The goal when selecting a school for your child should not simply be getting into a good college; it should be preparation for life in an educational environment where students are provided with opportunities to grow and mature into well-rounded individuals.

The Albany Academies (formed by the 2007 merger of the Albany Academy and Albany Academy for Girls) places a strong emphasis on the importance of engaging each of our students in the academics, the arts, athletics, community service, and more through a rigorous program that challenges them to become creative and independent thinkers.

We offer students the variety of single gender education in the Lower and Middle Schools along with coeducational opportunities in the Upper School. Our school is home to a 45-acre campus that includes a performing arts facility, state-of-the-art science laboratories, a greenhouse, an indoor suspended track, two international squash courts, indoor ice rink, indoor swimming pool, and numerous athletic fields.
We feel that the Academies offers a unique learning environment that provides children and young people with a number of opportunities that they won’t find anywhere else in the Capital Region. We encourage you to find out more about the special family environment that exists at our school by visiting www.albanyacademies.org.
