Let’s talk family: There’s the rock ’n roll British Osbournes, and the Osborne Brothers of Kentucky (of “Rocky Top” fame). And then there’s the Valley’s very own Osborn clan, whose horse trough monument (above) and hilltop property known as Castle Rock are both in Garrison. They say a family’s bond is as solid as rock; we agree. Kudos to Patricia Cornwell of Garrison, our November winner; check the Back Page for this month’s eye-catching landmark.
I was so excited to see the trough, as it immortalizes someone from my family. I am the great granddaughter of Henry Fairfield Osborn, Jr., Gurdon’s older brother. I’m familiar with both this trough and their summer home. They also had a house in Garrison called Wing and Wing, a beautiful white house located on Route 9D.

When my family first moved to Garrison, our home was located near the Garrison Landing. I spent many days exploring the waterfront, the bookstore, the Golden Eagle, and especially Guinan’s Country Store, back in the mid-1970s. Thanks for the memories.

Castle Rock has fascinated me for years, so in 1977 I went there, ostensibly for an auction (I still have the brochure), but actually just to see the castle up close. The view of West Point from their front terrace is amazing.

I remember delivering milk to Guinan’s store in the 1960s, and also to the Hello Dolly movie cast during their filming there. You can see the trough in the movie.

I happened to find “Still in the Saddle” (July 2008) about Vivien Malloy’s A Very Young Rider. As a kid, I read that book like it was my personal horse-riding bible, helping me to dream big. I’ve always wondered what happened to the characters in the book — if they stuck with horses, or if they left them behind for the “real world” like so many often do. Thank you so much for that story — it was a real treat to find.
