Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Look out, Pine Bush! There’s a new UFO sighting-station in town, and it’s grounded at the Peekskill waterfront. The Planetariummonetarium — a steel sphere sculpture that allows curious visitors to peek into the attached kaleidoscopes and telescope — was dreamed up by Dutch artist Serge Onnen for the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art’s Double Dutch exhibit (on view until late July). Gardiner’s Jim Daley was the first to hone in on this odd orb (and our prize); click here for our current quiz, which features a pair of presidential portraits.

Bravo, Beacon!

The “River Beacons” mural is a wonderful welcome to the city. When driving on Main Street, you make a graceful curve in front of the beautiful restored brick firehouse (now home to Hudson Beach Glass), and the mural leaps out at you from the brick wall of the restored storefronts. It is truly beautiful in person, better than any reproduction. The sailboat shown is the historic wooden sloop, the Woody Guthrie, lovingly maintained and operated by the Beacon Sloop Club. They offer free sunset sails throughout the summer, leaving from Beacon Harbor, where their eclectic “clubhouse” welcomes interested sailors of all sorts, and hosts the Beacon Farmers Market in the winter.

Making an Estate-ment

I loved “Making a Statement,” the story in your February issue regarding the remodel by a local architect. Wow — to my surprise, it is my house that is featured. As the article stated, it does have curb appeal, but the gardens in the back are truly beautiful and the home inside is charming as well.
I have one footnote to the story: The home is presently for sale. Anyone interested can call ReMax Benchmark Realty Group in New Windsor.

Hold the Line

Your review of Historic Photos of the Hudson Line in “The Way it Was” (February) by Polly Sparling was a great trip down memory lane worthy of any college history class. The picture of Garrison train station on the Hudson Line, originally built over 100 years ago, speaks volumes. Past generations’ investments in public transportation have clearly resulted in the economic success and growth of thriving communities today. Food for thought when contemplating new investments in public transportation.

Who-chester?

I just became aware of your magazine and found it informative and entertaining. However, I was disappointed with your article on Hudson Valley high schools (February). What happened to Westchester? I found it astonishing that all counties were included but Westchester. I was even more amazed that a school district like Oneonta, which is three hours from the river, is considered part of the Hudson Valley — but all of Westchester is not? You did the Valley a great disservice.

Westchester schools were purposely left out of this article because our sister publication, Westchester Magazine, covered the county’s high schools in their April 2009 issue. You can read the article here. And we’re afraid you are confusing Oneonta schools with the Onteora Central School District, which is located in central Ulster County.
