Where in the Hudson Valley…?
No other fork in the road has caused so many to scratch their noggins as the super-sized spear that divides Red Hook and Rhinebeck. Congrats to Dr. Robert Manning of Hyde Park; he took a stab (ouch!) at our contest and correctly identified the location of Stephen Schreiber’s 31-foot-high sculpture as the intersection of Routes 308 and 199 in the hamlet of Rock City. I grew up in Red Hook, and Rock City is between Red Hook and Milan. Rock City Relics Antique Store is great for an afternoon of browsing.

Those two roads bring back great memories for me as a child. My dad, who passed away five years ago, owned an upholstery place (Dutchess Canvas) right near that intersection on Route 199, and we lived down Route 308 in Rhinebeck.

I love this “fork” in the road sculpture not only because of the pun, but also because I always see it on my way to my favorite kitchen store, Warren Kitchen Cutlery. If you ever need help selecting knives, Richard is the best!

Upstate upset
I was very disappointed that the Catskills were not included in your “Summer Getaways” feature (May). I realize that you’re probably trying to feature a variety of destinations in neighboring states, but to completely ignore this beautiful, natural wonder right in your backyard saddens me. This area offers over 350,000 forever-wild acres of Catskill Mountains with endless opportunities for outdoor recreation including hiking, fishing, swimming, tubing, and horseback riding. There are art galleries, wine tours, local theaters, the Maverick Concerts in Woodstock, Belleayre Conservatory summer concert series in Highmount, farm stands, local crafts, and shopping to explore. Also, there are no traffic jams or crowds to contend with. Getting a table for a great meal (usually prepared with organic local ingredients by great chefs) is never a problem. We certainly hope that you and your readers will consider paying us a visit.
