Where in the Hudson Valley…?

You’d think it might be difficult to pinpoint one very specific sapling in the whole Hudson Valley, but for our readers, it’s as easy as (cherry) pie. Regular visitors to Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh quickly recognized the two-year-old Liberty Tree (whose parent plant in Annapolis, Maryland was an icon of freedom during the Revolutionary War); but it was Stuart Ober of Woodstock who took home our prize. This month, be the first to find our next landmark: a schoolhouse bell in an unlikely spot.
We enjoyed a visit to Washington’s Headquarters on President’s Day and had a real treat. There were wonderful reenactments, tours, army songs, and speakers, including a very impressive George Washington himself. And cherry cake was dished out for all the visitors! It would be a terrible injustice if it’s not repeated due to the state budget cuts. It is part of our nation’s heritage and should be shared proudly. Thanks for highlighting it in this month’s HV.

No one who has spent any time visiting Newburgh (or living there) can miss Washington’s Headquarters. I’ve stood just to the right of that tree on Memorial Day to honor those who died for their country. Created in revolution and the first of our historical sites, I feel proud that it still stands in our backyard.

Geography Goof
In “A [man-made] River Runs Through It” (August), the first paragraph references Port Jervis and Wurtsboro as being part of Ulster County. Check the maps next time — Port Jervis is in Orange County and Wurtsboro is in Sullivan County.

The Big Apple of our Eye
I loved your article about one-of-a-kind things to do in Albany (“Focus on Albany,” July). But I’m not sure if putting New York’s attractions in a negative light was the best way to present Albany’s positive points. I personally love the city and upstate equally, and for very different reasons. Thanks for the mix of info, from restaurants to tours and cultural areas.

As a person who has been diagnosed with rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, I was anxious to see who you named as the region’s top rheumatologists (“Top Doctors,” June). I was surprised to see that you did not include the specialty in your article. Maybe next year?

I wanted to clear up a small statement made in your Table Talk column (“A Touch of Class,” June). While I worked for Peter Kelly for 10 years, and Peter graciously sponsored me to attend the Sommelier Society of America way back in 1993, I was not responsible for picking the wines at his restaurants. My distinguished colleague and friend, Billy Rattner, should be given credit for the fabulous wine lists at the Xaviar’s Restaurant Group. The awards I won were for the Lighthouse on the Hudson in Piermont and the Park Steakhouse in New Jersey.
