Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Write us at

We know Henry Hudson could have benefited from a GPS back in 1609; to say he “got lost” en route to the West Indies is a bit of an understatement. But the fact that his Half Moon found its way atop the SUNY Albany administrative building (formerly the Delaware & Hudson Railroad building) might be pushing it. Ironically, this surprisingly large ship — in the form of a 400-pound, nine-foot-high copper weather vane — does a decent job giving directions to New York’s capital city. Tiffany Runge, of Boiceville, was the first to spot this wayward yacht; try our next quiz featuring a walkway with some very tricky paintings.

A smaller replica sits atop another Marcus Reynolds achievement — the Albany Academy for Boys, also in Albany.

I worked in the D&H building for many years, and I now work across the street, so I get to see this wonderful weather vane every day.

The Little Red Buggy is No More

Although I have lived in Florida for 12 years, I was dismayed to read in the Mailbox section that the little car on the rock above I-84 has been painted over. What a wonderful, familiar feeling it was to see it. Since my late husband drove Volkswagens, we always referred to the car that way.

I, like so many, am very upset about the “painting over” of the little red car on Route 84 West! How cruel to take away that sweet piece of happiness that was always waiting for us, causing us to smile once again, while on a long journey homeward-bound.

What’s Up, Doc?

Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck has a five-star-rated Bone and Joint Center led by Orthopedic Associates of Dutchess County and is ranked second in New York State by HealthGrades for total joint replacement surgery, second only to the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. HealthGrades rates on physician performance, clinical excellence, and patient outcomes.

According to your “Top Doctors” article (June 2009), your resource for selecting top doctors was supplied by a medical research firm, Castle Connolly, which “asks local doctors, hospital administrators and other medical staff to nominate the ‘top’ doctors in their own and related specialties.”

While I have no reason to assume the honored doctors are not worthy, I prefer to select my physicians based on their performance and patient outcomes rather than on how they are thought of by their peers.
