Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Write to us: edit@hvmag.com

This trolley stop, once the bustling center of the Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls Railway Company, offered a unique passenger shelter with its quirky circular shape and red brick walls. Now, the Trolley Waiting Center — perhaps the last surviving reminder of the railway — welcomes visitors (and ghosts!) to the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Kudos to Kathleen Garrand of Kingston, who was the first to spot it behind the graveyard’s entrance gate along Route 9. Want to reel in your own prize? Try this month’s quiz about a huge mural featuring the Hudson and the vibrant life around it.

Walkway Watch

I have been following the progress of the Walkway Over the Hudson (Walk This Way, October 2009) for a long time. I flew [to New York] this past fall and, along with my brother Michael, experienced the thrill of walking over our beloved river. We took so many photos, watched trains on both sides of the river, and met some really nice people, all of us just enjoying the view and the foliage. And, it is free. Thanks to all who put so much time, energy, and love into this unique opportunity. Did I mention I am a former resident of Dutchess County?

We hear ya, Marilou! Bravo to Walkway Over the Hudson’s organizers, sponsors, and builders for successfully preserving this bit of Valley history. Readers, catch up on our Walkway coverage by reading our October article here.

Snug as a Bug in a Cold Winter Snowstorm

Great article (Buggin’ Out, January)! It brought back memories of my 1962 VW Beetle, which I drove during my high school and college days. Not only did my Bug have no heat, it didn’t even have a gas gauge (much less a broken one). Instead, there was a lever on the floor that you had to turn when you started to run out of gas; the lever would engage a one-gallon reserve tank — enough fuel to get you at least 30 miles!

Thanks for the fun story. Let’s have more like this.
