Local Nurse Honored as an Extraordinary Healer

Orange County’s Sara Sargente was recognized as CURE magazine’s Extraordinary Healer of 2017.

An Orange County nurse was chosen as the 2017 CURE Extraordinary Healer for Oncology Nursing, a title that honors nurses dedicated to helping patients with cancer. Actor Patrick Dempsey was the keynote speaker at the award reception, that was held with the Oncolgy Nursing Society’s Annual Congress in Denver, Colorado.

Every year since 2007, CURE magazine gives readers the opportunity to nominate an oncology nurse for the Extraordinary Healer title through an essay that describes their dedication and expertise.

Sara Sargente, RN, ONC, of Middletown’s Orange Regional Medical Center was recognized for the honor at the Extraordinary Healer award reception on May 4, considering herself a representative of “all oncology nurses out there who all know that oncology nursing is a passion and a love done with compassionate hands and hearts for the real heroes: the patients,” according to a press release.

Dempsey, known for his role on the show Grey’s Anatomy, has been an ambassador for Breakaway from Cancer since 2007. Dempsey made sure to hop in a photo with Sargente, who will be featured in an upcoming issue of CURE magazine alongside the winning essay.

“I dedicate this honor to my dad and to all of our patients going through their cancer journey,” Sargente says.
