Local Farmers Get a Leg Up

Six-month program will help local Hudson Valley growers and food businesses support the wide demand for locally grown product.

The Hudson Valley is well known for its rolling grasslands, fertile soil, and relatively prime conditions for conducting a whole host of agricultural activities. But local farmers and artisans know that growing an agribusiness—even in these choice circumstances—can be just as trying as a harsher climate. The Hudson Valley AgriBusiness Development Corporation (HVADC) recognizes this struggle, and has recently announced a new initiative to help local farmers and food entrepreneurs kickstart their goals.

Known as the Farm and Food Business Accelerator (FBBA), the six-month, intensive program is designed to help local agribusiness entrepreneurs develop the skill set and capital they need to ultimately expand their livelihood. The rigorous curriculum includes participation in teleconferenced classes, peer-to-peer networking, and a mentorship with industry professionals tailored to each business, all culminating in a unique opportunity to pitch business plans to potential funders.

FBBA is only open to individuals who own a farm, food, fiber, or agriculture-dependent business based in the Hudson Valley, and the HVADC expects all participants to adequately dedicate themselves to program requirements. For more information or to fill out an application, visit www.hvadc.org.
