Little Party, Big Place

The Wedding Guru Judy Lewis fields this week’s wedding questions. Today: Little Party, Big Place

Sydney asks:“My reception venue can hold upwards of two hundred people — but I’ll have less than a hundred guests for my reception. How can I make the room seem smaller, so my tables won’t get lost in the big space?”Dear Sydney: Some venues solve this problem for their customers by providing partitions such as accordion doors, which can be closed to make a large room appear smaller. Barring that, you can do wonders with screens and drapes! Hire a professional whose expertise is room décor. In the same way as model homes are “staged” to make rooms look larger, a savvy designer can do the opposite with a large space. You should also consult with the stage manager of your local theater group — not only may he or she offer suggestions of how to handle your problem, but they may have materials that you can borrow or rent for your affair. Finally, you can call local rental businesses, tell them your issue, and see what they have that’ll work for you. At one wedding I attended in a large room with a small crowd, the bride had a small tent placed in the middle of the big room. It created a lovely, cozy atmosphere!Valley decorators and designers, got any ideas I might have missed? Share your thoughts in the comments box below.
