Tick, tock — where’s that clock? The subject of our August quiz is none other than the Chatham Clock Tower, of course. In its heyday, Chatham was a well-known railroad hub and industrial center; now, it’s one of our Top Towns (see why at hvmag.com/TopTowns2012). Hats off to Jean Barford of Valatie, who named our tall timekeeper in the nick of… well, time. This month, giddy up to our latest puzzler here, where the first reader to identify the location of our old-fashioned carriage wins a prize.
I would know this clock anytime. I have seen it every day of my life. Chatham, New York: my hometown and darn proud of it. We have always called it the Town Clock.

Grassroots gratitude
I have been a subscriber for the better part of 24 years. My reason for writing is simply to thank the hundreds of grassroots groups who have worked tirelessly over the last 40 or so years, and who continue to work tirelessly, to make Dutchess County a piece of heaven on earth. Everywhere you look, whether it be Beacon, Poughkeepsie, the Hudson River waterfront, or countless other destinations within the county, there is evidence of hard work and improvement.

Food for thought
We received our copy of the August issue with Mix N Mac’s Tomazza Melt as one of the featured sandwiches. It was a wonderful spread (I wanted all the sandwiches). It is so wonderful to have our business recognized. We cook fresh daily and want to put out the best comfort food Orange County and Middletown have to offer.

A cover story about sandwiches for a multi-county magazine? A publication filled with potential stories sure to have far more interest: the war stories, the update on the hurricane, cultural growth… but sandwiches? Leave that to Gourmet or Food and Wine, please.

Northern perspective
I really do believe you should change your magazine’s name to Mid-Hudson Valley since, once again, the area north of Columbia County has been relegated to the status of chopped liver.
In your piece on the West Point Foundry and its founding as a result of the War of 1812 (“War Stories,” Aug.), you write that President Madison ordered the creation of four cannon foundries. Couldn’t you have at least mentioned that another of the four foundries was the Watervliet Arsenal? It sits next to the Hudson River and is still in operation.
I’ve written to you before about the sparse coverage of the Rensselaer and Albany County communities on the Hudson River, to no avail. I do wish you would consider renaming your magazine in the pursuit of truth and reality.
