Granted, most folks visit a library to read books and not gravestones; but positioned near the rear entrance of Poughkeepsie’s Adriance Memorial Library is this petite marker, which was unearthed during the library’s recent extensive renovations. The memorial is for “Mary,” child of Oliver H. and Elizabeth Booth. Poughkeepsie’s Chris Gent, a VP with the Palombo Group (a construction management company in Stanfordville), is our winner. He writes: “The headstone is located at the Adriance Library in Poughkeepsie. A Diamond in the rough?
Your story on Jack “Legs” Diamond (Aug.) was most interesting to me. One summer when my aunt was in her 20s, she decided to vacation in the Catskills. The first evening she was there, while dining at a restaurant, she was approached by a very well-dressed and distinguished looking gentleman. He struck up a conversation with her, introduced himself as “Jack,” and offered to buy her dinner. She readily accepted his offer.
My aunt was a stunning blonde, and “Jack” made it very clear to her that — with no strings attached — he’d love to be her constant escort during her stay. He told her he liked to be seen with beautiful women. They spent several days together, during which time he not only wined and dined her but bought her many expensive gifts. He told her that money was no object.
She found out that her companion was “Legs” Diamond by seeing his picture in a local newspaper.
My aunt always maintained he was a perfect gentleman, and treated her like royalty. She often told me it was one of the highlights of her life and one of the greatest experiences she ever had.

Tortillaville’s turn
It is sad that HVM missed Tortillaville in Hudson for your food truck spread (Small Bites, July). I feel that your research fell short, as we are now in our third season smack dab in the middle of Warren Street. And we are quite the sensation here. Although disappointed to not be included, we hope to get another chance in coming articles.
