Where in the Valley…?
Not bad. Not bad at all, Valleyites. An amazing number of you were able to identify the home of the cannon as Fort Montgomery, located on the west bank of the Hudson River, just 10 minutes north of Bear Mountain State Park.
The fort was the brainchild of the Continental Army, commanded by Governor George Clinton. The choice location made it perfect for troops to spot pesky British ships traveling up the river with supplies in tow. The fortress saw its most bloody battle on October 6, 1777. British troops bypassed myriad fortifications set in the Hudson, overrunning the fort and killing half the Patriot troops. Now declared a National Historic Landmark, Fort Montgomery memorializes the infamous battle, offering visitors an informative museum with displays of original weapons and artifacts, walking trails, and breathtaking views of the Hudson. Although the British burned down much of the fort, archaeologists uncovered original stone foundations; informational plaques and signs give a brief history of each foundation as well as facts about the soliders’ everyday life at the fort. Among the most popular attractions are the reproduction cannons, which are occasionally fired off for reenactments.

A good friend of mine is a history buff so we have visited Fort Montgomery for some of their evening lecture series events, as well as to explore the grounds. He loves to visualize what was versus what is there now.

My husband and I have been there. The views of the Hudson River and Bear Mountain are stunning! There is also an easy trail close by which takes you to the Bear Mountain Zoo.

My daughters and I visit this site often. We like to hike over the Popolopen Creek footbridge and under the Bear Mountain Bridge into the Bear Mountain Zoo. Beautiful!
