In last month’s quiz, we asked readers to identify a 19th-century observatory. Famed as the first female astronomer in the United States, Maria Mitchell served as the director of this structure for stargazing, which sits on the Vassar College campus. Hats off to Barbara Antol of Poughquag for being the first reader to place this domed edifice. The whereabouts of a bold boxer is the subject of this month’s puzzler.
This is at Vassar College. My husband’s company actually built the new observatory!

This old observatory is especially wonderful because its first director was a woman. It is so special that Vassar is using it for classrooms and office spaces, rather than knocking it down.

A Grand Time
Let us all rejoice in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Grand Central Terminal (Commuter Corner, October). Contrast this with the late, great Penn Station Terminal, which was destroyed in the name of progress in 1962. Fast forward 51 years later. Penn Station is still a shell of its former glory; but Grand Central has high ceilings, natural light, gourmet food shops, and great restaurants. Long Island Railroad riders look forward to 2019 when the MTA East Side Access project provides a direct connection to Grand Central. We can then join our Metro-North comrades in utilizing this great institution to and from work.
