Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Write to us: edit@hvmag.com

To frack or not to frack? While the folks in the Catskills and elsewhere debate the merits of hydraulic fracturing, there’s at least one place in the Valley that won’t stand to be drilled anytime soon: Kingston. More specifically, the Rondout Marina, where a No Fracking sculpture (and the subject of last month’s contest) defiantly stands in an attempt to discourage the controversial practice of natural gas extraction. Kudos to Paul Savage of Big Indian for spotting this political piece of art. Click here for this month’s puzzler, which features a teeny telephone booth-turned-library.

Thanks for giving a boost to the no-fracking movement and the primo art scene in the Hudson Valley.

Aim lower

I’ve been a subscriber to Hudson Valley magazine for several years. Although the magazine has some interesting articles, most of it is focused on the upper Hudson Valley. I live in Rockland County and am finding less and less about this area. I am considering not renewing my subscription because if this.
If more about Rockland, Westchester, and Orange counties is included in future issues, I might reconsider renewing.

I was excited to find your article about Legs Diamond (“They Got Legs,” August). Legs Diamond often visited my grandfather’s boarding house at Tuckers Corners in Clintondale. It was told to us that Legs asked my grandfather if he could use his boarding house and property to set up a hidden distillery. I am proud to say that my grandfather said no. My grandparents operated a boarding house, farm, and sewing factory for many years. To this day I have very fond childhood memories of my grandparent’s boarding house. Thank you for this little piece of history.

Prude dude

Having been a longtime reader of HV Mag, I was just wondering when you started doing porn advertising? My Passion Peddler (in with wedding ads no less) is a very thinly veiled porn and group sex promoter, correct?
I know there are plenty of places to see questionable ads, such as car magazines or the sports section of the paper, but HV Mag seemed like it was doing well enough not to go in this direction.
For now I’ll just make sure I don’t let my kids read it. Or wife. Or mother. Or tell people I read it. Maybe you can just start sending it out in a discreet brown wrapper.
Thanks for listening.

Editors’ note: My Passion Peddler is a company that sells adult products in the Hudson Valley; Hudson Valley does not endorse pornography.

All aboard the Times Square Railroad?

I usually enjoy your magazine and find your articles informative and entertaining. However, when reading a recent issue, I had a different reaction. I was fascinated with David Levine’s piece on Sing Sing prison (“Up the River,” September) until I read a quote from Guy Cheli, who is a published author and appeared to be a great source on the history of Sing Sing. Mr. Cheli stated, “The train from Times Square goes right past [Sing Sing].” It does? Since when? Last time I checked the train from Grand Central Terminal goes right past Sing Sing. How can an author of history make such a mistake? And how can a reporter for Hudson Valley not correct the author? And what about an editor of a magazine to which I subscribe not catching such an error? Perhaps I will not be renewing my subscription.
