Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Write to us: edit@hvmag.com

Of all the Valley’s caves and rocky outcrops, few bestow a greater sense of wonder than the “Stone Church” in the Town of Dover. Named for its uncanny resemblance to a pulpit, the formation has impressed artists and backpackers alike — including Stormville’s Michael Du Vernoy, who recognized our “craggy chapel” and snagged our prize. This month, click here to pinpoint the location of a war hero’s memorial.

The old stone church is hidden around a bend, so you don’t realize you are almost upon it, and then you walk a few more yards, and suddenly the spectacular view appears. It is a pretty remarkable natural structure.

It was not mentioned how much garnet is lodged into the stone!

Home sweet home

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the McComb house (Mid-Century Master, Mar.) where I was raised and for which I hold so many happy and dear memories. The Groten family has done a singularly magnificent job in keeping true to the spirit of the house while expanding, renovating, fixing, and treasuring it. They have certainly restored this magnificent residence to its rightful stature, as a place of beauty and magic. Oh, how I still love this house!
I’d just like to correct one little bit: my Dad was not employed at Vassar College as a purchasing agent when the house was built; he gained that position many years later in the mid-1960s. At the time of its construction, my father was still in the family business as a vice president at Smith Brothers. Skohuset (the “little wood’s house,” as we called it in Danish vernacular) was built in 1951, when cough drops were still important to Poughkeepsie, the Smith family was a big deal (my dad was one of the three adopted sons of William W. Smith II), and I was not even one year old.

Town talk

I just took a little walking tour of Saugerties (Top Towns, Apr.) the other day after having moved nearly six years ago. What a change! It was great when we lived there, but it’s even better now. The village hums with activity. Here’s my Photostream of the village: http://bit.ly/SaugertiesCBVGR.

Thanks for the recent article about Athens (Top Towns, Apr.). It is a great village, the people are friendly, and the river is a jewel. You mentioned a couple of great places to eat, but there are more. There is Dionysus Italian Restaurant on North Water Street, with terrific food and a nice patio overlooking the river.
