Local artists can’t help but show their appreciation for this great big Valley of ours, and the latest creation of Poughkeepsie painter Nestor Madalengoitia perfectly examplifies this notion. His mural, titled “Welcome to the Hudson River Valley,” features iconic Valley landmarks and symbols of waterfront life — including the Walkway Over the Hudson and the sloop Clearwater. Pat Wendler of Gardiner was the first to spy this work of art, which hangs in the Poughkeepsie Train Station. As a recreational boater during the summer months, I spend most of my time around this area and feel the artist did capture “what the Valley is all about.” My family and I enjoy the Walkway Over the Hudson, and are very much looking forward to the completed rail trail that will connect with the Walkway. Further, we attend the Balloon Fest; follow local college sports; participate in various outdoor activities; and enjoy the picturesque views of nature, scenic boat tours, and the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum (which, although not pictured, is very close to the depicted location).

Regarding “Market Value” (Feb.): Thanks for reminding your readers that local produce can be found all winter long — it just takes a tad more effort. Several farm markets/orchards like ours are open daily all winter, since apples keep very well and we make cider regularly (in addition to donuts and pies, of course). Plus, we continue to offer a monthly farm dinner featuring locally grown/made products.
In the Hudson Valley we can enjoy a fun fall weekend of apple picking and wonderfully tasty apples when snow covers the ground. How cool is that?
