Letters to the Editor in June 2012

Read our letters to the editor for June 2012, including our Where in the Valley “Hero’s Honor” contest answer

Where in the Hudson Valley…?

Write to us: edit@hvmag.com

The Valley is steeped in Revolutionary War history, so it’s no surprise that residents can’t walk five steps without bumping into a monument dedicated to a decorated war hero. We asked readers to identify one such memorial commemorating French-born General Marquis de Lafayette, who was instrumental in gaining France’s support for the Colonial army. This particular marker — correctly pinpointed by David Moranski of Beacon — is located in the Rombout Rural Cemetery on Route 52, near the Brinckerhoff House in the Town of Fishkill. Find this month’s query here, where we profile a Valley house of worship built in the Greek Revival style.

What’s the scoop?

I’ve looked high and low, but I can’t find anything on our local favorite, Johnny Gelato Homemade Ice Cream in the Kent Shopping Plaza [Carmel]. Great gelato in all kinds of different flavors: I had the maple bacon-flavored gelato tonight. That’s right, maple bacon. Don’t make a face unless you’ve tried it, it was delicious. My cardiologist might not like it, but he’s not the one eating it!

This query was recently posted to our August 2006 dining feature, “Who’s Got the Ice Cream,” prompting our editors to wonder why it’s been so long since they’ve done a proper Valley-wide ice cream roundup (especially when there’s maple bacon gelato to be had). Thanks to Mr. Zaffino for putting this local father-daughter business on our radar — and giving us a reason to conduct some good, old-fashioned “field research.” We’ll be sure not to alert our cardiologists.

Driving-in to the Valley

A Night at the (Drive-In) Theater” (“Summer Fun,” May) was a great trip down Memory Lane for Long Island residents. We lost our own last drive-in movie theater years ago. It is just one of many reasons why more and more of us continue to visit and consider moving to the Hudson Valley.

Many thanksss for your article

I really enjoyed reading the whole article (“Bellying Up,” March), as you did a terrific job in creating insight into the dance while highlighting the various teaching perspectives of Willow, Angie, and myself. Readers receive the important message of health, empowerment, and enjoyment among a choice of teachers.
Belly blessingsss,

Unapologetically Late Results of an Impromptu Facebook Poll:

On April 8, we asked fans how they planned to spend their Easter Sunday. A whopping 70 percent joined their grandmothers for traditional brunch (no word yet on whether this was voluntary); 20 percent went egg-hunting with the kids; while a surprisingly low 10 percent admitted they spent the day biting the ears off every Lindt bunny that crossed their paths. Your lips may be zipped, Valley candy fiends, but they’re also covered in chocolate.
