When they think of church architecture, most people imagine ornate basilicas and Gothic cathedrals — certainly not Greek columns. But Newburgh’s Dutch Reformed Church has them (four, to be exact). The structure owes its distinctive Greek Revival stylings to 19th-century architect Alexander Jackson Davis; it’s regarded as the last existing church by Davis that was constructed in this style. Congratulations to Heather Pillsworth of Washingtonville, who correctly answered our quiz. This month, identify the exact spot upon which a village’s founder raised his family.

“Remembering Levon Helm” by Kitty Sheehan (June) was one of the most uplifting and poignant articles I’ve read since his passing. As a fan of his music and life, I have read almost every article that’s been published since his death, and this was the only one that captured his true spirit. The author saw Levon as most of us did — as a man that drew people to him — and she felt that sense of intimacy that you could only get from being at one of his Rambles. Although I never met Levon, I feel a great sense of loss, but I’m comforted knowing that he will live on through his family, his fans, and his community.

Saugerties (Top Towns, Apr.) is a classic small town that has a hipness all its own (without being pretentious about it). I always skip the malls for gifts and find way better stuff in town. The people are friendly and it’s always a blast to go there.

Out with it
I was dismayed to see that “Gay Life” was being covered in the magazine (Pride in the Valley, June). If there is ever such a section again I will cancel my subscription. I would argue that at least 50 percent of your readership would not welcome such coverage. I have disposed of that issue. This is not the type of “coffee table” information I would expose family or guests to.

I was disappointed to receive the Top Docs (June) issue of your magazine. As we head into summer, the pages of your June issue should have been dedicated to the amazing CSAs and farm markets around the Valley. I’d love to see some of the newer farms in the area highlighted, as they are doing fantastic things for agriculture in the Valley.
