Where in the Hudson Valley…?
In January, we asked readers to pinpoint the location of “Legacy” — one of the street murals that make up the series of paintings called “Life in Color.” The paintings decorate walls along Newburgh’s waterfront, and are all created by Chilean artist Dasic Fernandez. Local civic groups contributed between $70,000-$80,000 to fund the murals in hopes that, by transforming public spaces into artwork, the series will foster a vibrant and welcoming feeling in the once-grand city. Congrats to Nils and Cindy Anderson of Cornwall, who nabbed our prize. This month, see if you know the whereabouts of a watery roadblock.
What a great way to start the work day. On my drive into Newburgh, it’s the “Wall Art” on the right and the Hudson River on the left.

As I was driving along River Road I took a double-take at the beautiful wall art. It is absolutely gorgeous! Well worth seeing.

Breakfast backlash
What a disappointment! Twenty-seven restaurants showcased in the January issue (“Best Breakfasts”), only two from Dutchess County (diners don’t count). When I think HV Mag, I think Dutchess. I admit, I have yet to eat at Babette’s Kitchen or the Big Tomato, but look forward to doing so. With 67 Dutchess eateries listed in “Eating Out,” it’s hard to believe that we have to drive north, south, and west to find the to-die-for morning meal.

I’m disappointed that you missed one of the best brunch spots, the Beacon Falls Cafe. They no longer take reservations because they can’t hold a table. In a 26-seat restaurant to see more than 200 people for brunch is more than outstanding — they do this every week! The eggs Benedict is awesome and my favorite is the bananas Foster French toast. The portions are huge and it’s a great value for the money. You missed a great restaurant on your list.

Politically Incorrect?
I’ve been a reader of your magazine over the past several years, and have thoroughly enjoyed your coverage of Valley doings. That is, until you started interjecting politics between the covers. In the “The Year in Review” article (December), your bold headline, “No Fracking Way,” is in bad taste. A more neutral headline, such as “Hot Button Issue” would have been less offensive. More importantly, fracking is allowing the U.S. to become self-sufficient in energy production. You referenced Ms. Samantha Malone of the FracTracker Alliance, a lobbyist group. You gave her credibility while referencing no one in favor of fracking. On the same page, you spotlight “More IBM Layoffs.” But not to worry. Congressman Maloney wants these fired workers “to know that their community is here for them.”
“Investigating life” is one thing, but taking sides is another.
