A giant 12-feet-tall, 400 pound statue of a man towers over customers at Taste Budd’s Café in Red Hook. The artwork — aptly named “Man” — is the creation of Barrytown artist Andres San Millan. Native American history inspired him to piece the crouching figure together using only driftwood from the Hudson. In January, 20 people hauled it down Routes 9G and 199 on a cart before parking it outside the eatery, where it will remain until the end of the year. Hats off to Hopewell Junction’s Margaret Nikola for being the first to identify this twisting tumbler. Click here and see if you know the location of a famous rustic resting spot.
This statue is located in Red Hook. We passed it when we were there for a softball tournament. Great little town!

The “Man” is such a beautiful piece of artwork. I enjoy looking at it every time I pass by. Andres San Millan is very talented.

Country Living Convert
Thanks for a great magazine, which has helped with my recent move from concrete Brooklyn. Since the relocation, I’ve encountered some unexpected things: It never occurred to me that a pizzeria might not deliver, or that some towns might not have sidewalks to go for an evening stroll. But I’ve also found many unexpected pleasures to country living, which I’ll have to share with you some time in the future. After all, we are in the agrarian north, so what’s the rush?

Your review of area schools was very disappointing (“The Best High School for Your Child,” February). It was mostly a cut and paste from each school’s site. You should do a comprehensive school performance analysis, public and private, at all levels. Are private schools worth the money? Are public schools competitive versus other schools in the country? If you want to make a difference, tackle education in the Hudson Valley.
