Where in the Hudson Valley…?

In last month’s contest, we challenged readers to identify the location of a “feathered” weather vane. Erected in 1795, it perches atop a spire on the First Reformed Church of Fishkill — which played a vital role in the American Revolution. In 1776, the New York Provincial Congress, which drafted the state’s constitution, met there; and the building was also used as a prison. The rooster was famously regilded in the 1980s. Hats off to John Hupcey of Poughkeepsie who nabbed our prize. This month, click here to see if you can identify a remnant of an old mill.

I was privileged to take part in the oversight and removal of the rooster by steeplejacks in 1984 so it could be regilded. It’s a beautiful rooster!

I pass the radiant rooster almost every day. On sunny days, the copper glistens. It was incredible to watch the steeple being reshingled.

My relatives are buried in this [church’s] cemetery.

The church is so interesting to visit, as is the cemetery by it. In fact, my daughter got married in this church.

All Aboard

I loved your piece on renovated train stations (February). It was fascinating to learn the story of these depots and their place in HV history, as well as to recognize the ones that I have visited. Not sure if it is still open, but the old Peekskill station operated for years as Kelly’s On The Green, a bar/restaurant serving American and Irish fare. Thanks for the article!

Very Vegan

Haha! Great article on being sort of vegan (February). I decided to go vegetarian for 2014 and related to many of your experiences (not the losing eight pounds). Enjoyed reading about your experience!

A New ’Do

I wanted to thank you for publishing such a beautiful piece on what we are trying to accomplish with cancer patients at An’tyrice Salon and Spa (February). It feels so good to know that we have touched many people.

Many Thanks

I wanted to reach out to you regarding the article “10 Women Who Are Taking Care of Business” (December), which featured my business, Dash Ink. Let me tell you, your article turned my business around. Since the day your article came out, my telephone has not stopped ringing! I get new e-mails and social media messages every day from people who read about my business and want my services. Your article validated my business. It made me feel like I had finally made my dream come true. I look forward to reading more of your wonderful articles.
