There’s a white-and-red ambulance led by a mustached man with tinkering tools driving across the Hudson Valley.

A brand new venture for Jaymark Jewelers, located in Cold Spring, the mobile Jewelry Medic repair service launched at the end of September. Jaymark owner Jim Matero drives the truck with his caricature on it to homes from Ossining to Hyde Park.

“Frankly, we felt that it was a service that was not being provided.  Dog groomers and other services come to the house — why not jewelry repair?” says Jim Matero’s son and store manager James Matero. “Whether it is someone in a nursing home or assisted living facility, or someone working in a business park 13 hours a week, or a stay-at-home mom with four kids, our services are accessible to everyone.”

The Jewelry Medic offers a variety of services including gemstone, diamond, and watch battery replacement, chain and band repair, custom ring sizing, and refinishing. Appointments typically last an hour and have a $75 minimum for any combination of services, aside from gold buying which has no minimum.

Providing customers with the convenience and customization they want is a major priority for Matero. In designing personalized jewelry, Jaymark utilizes state-of-the-art 3D printing and CAD (Computer Aided Design) technology.

“It’s jewelry that you’re not going to see at any other jewelry store. I design pieces right in front of customers so they can see the exact model we will use. I can make revisions while they’re still there, and they can know it will be absolutely perfect,” Matero explains.

Matero is the fourth generation to manage Jaymark Jewelers. Simon Karagozian founded the company in 1969, two miles from where it stands today. Karagozian managed a jewelry manufacturing company called K C Design in the late 1940s in Manhattan before moving upstate.

Karagozian passed Jaymark onto his son-in-law and grandsons, and the business has remained in the family ever since.

Matero and his father, both graduate gemologists, have worked diligently to expand Jaymark in a changing environment. In November of 2018 they added a bridal suite/diamond gallery for custom engagement rings and related services.

In case of jewelry emergencies, appointments can be made with the Jewelry Medic at jewelry911.com or by calling 845.243.0119.
