March heralds the beginning of Women’s History Month, and with it, International Women’s Day — a time when countries all over the globe reflect on the political and social achievements of the fairer sex. To commemorate the holiday’s centennial anniversary last year, more than 750 Hudson Valley women and their families attended the first “Join Me on the Bridge” celebration on Walkway Over the Hudson. The act of walking across a bridge in solidarity was echoed by supporters worldwide as part Women for Women International’s campaign to demonstrate how participants could “build the bridges of peace and hope for the future.”

This year, Walkway Over the Hudson once again welcomes celebrants to the iconic state park for its “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures” event. Activities include giveaways for the first 500 registered walkers, performances by local female musicians and chorus groups, and an address by keynote speaker Dr. Carol Ann Malizia and Highland High School senior Shafari Pinak. Event begins at 2:30 p.m.; shuttle buses are available from Highland, NY. Visit www.dutchesscountyregionalchamber.org/IWD_2012 for more information and a complete schedule of events.
