I believe mental health is as important as physical health, and during Covid isolation was a big factor affecting people’s well-being. Meditation, interacting with friends and family, and being outdoors all can improve an individual’s outlook. Personally, I have been spending a lot of time hiking and have found some hidden gems. I believe that each day one should have a “religious moment”—take some time to pause and appreciate your life. It may take the form of walking barefoot on your lawn, stopping to watch the sun set, or simply connecting with a friend from years past. We all need to take time to pause and breathe.

There have been many developments in the field of cardiology over the last few years. To me, the most exciting development is the increased availability of minimally invasive valvular procedures. Valvular heart disease frequently affects the elderly, many of whom would not tolerate open-heart surgery. With these new technologies, those suffering from one of the most common valve issues, aortic valve stenosis, can essentially walk out of the hospital the next day.

The marriage of medicine and technology is going to be extremely exciting. Patients have benefited from minimal invasive surgery, and I wouldn’t be surprised if technology makes future surgery even less invasive and traumatic for the patient. This will translate into less pain and quicker recuperation. The thought of having surgery is very frightening to most people. I wish more people understood that with modern techniques there is much less to be afraid of today than there was 20 years ago.

Now is not the time for patients to drop their guard in the fight against Covid. Unfortunately, a large portion of the population remains unvaccinated. As long as the virus is able to replicate, it will continue to mutate and remain a major issue for years to come. I remind my patients who are vaccinated to continue to take precautions. I try to understand other patients’ reasoning for remaining unvaccinated and to educate them regarding the myths surrounding vaccination.

The one question I wish patients would ask is, ‘What do I need to do to optimize my outcome after surgery?’ My answer: take ownership of your rehabilitation. Do not rely on nurses, physical therapists, or home health aides to rehabilitate your joint replacement. The best results occur when patients perform the exercises we recommend, at the frequency we recommend. The physical therapists can then provide guidance, encouragement, and support. This is like doing homework in school. Your teacher can provide guidance, but unless you do your work as assigned, your grade will suffer.
