Hudson House River Inn

Cold Spring, Putnam County

Situated practically a stone’s throw away from the east bank of the Hudson River, this historic local landmark basks in the looming shadows of West Point and the majestic Storm King Mountain. It’s just a short walk from Cold Spring’s many mom-and-pop shops and locally focused restaurants, and even closer to the town’s MetroNorth station (good news for those coming from NYC and Westchester’s river towns).

Built in 1832, it today claims a spot on the National Register of Historic Places as the second-oldest continuously operated inn in New York State. And though the inn has been lovingly restored since its 19th-century start, you can still feel the richness in its antiquity from the moment you set down your suitcase. Period furnishings brush against charming patterned wallpaper for a feel that’s old-time-y, but not tired, while cozy linens and floral trimmings embrace the romantic sensibilities of life in the country.

Select a room with a full water-facing balcony and spend your evenings swooning over Hudson River sunsets. Then, venture downstairs for dinner at the inn’s own River Room with a menu featuring half-a-dozen prime aged steaks and a nice selection of seafood specialties. And if you’re in the mood for a drink and some lighter bites, head across the hall to the Tavern Room and warm up to intimate pub-like fare by the fire.

In the morning, a menu of complimentary breakfast concessions is ready for your choosing. But whether or not you go full-carb with a piled-high plate of blueberry buttermilk pancakes (we highly recommend you do), opt for a table on the waterfront porch, once the weather warms up.

Exploring the Area

Though you could easily spend hours rummaging through Main Street’s many antique stores, spend some time scoping out Boscobel House and Gardens (845.265.3638; www.boscobel.org) in neighboring Garrison — whether for a scenic picnic along the landscaped grounds, or for an indoor tour of the elegant 19th-century house/museum. Book a visit to Magazzino Italian Art (845.666.7202; www.magazzino.art) to view an expansive private collection of post-war and contemporary Italian pieces housed in a sleek warehouse space, then grab lunch made with local ingredients at Main Street’s Hudson Hil’s Cafe & Market (845.265.9471; www.hudsonhils.com).
