Hip Hideaway

Wm. Farmer & Sons, Hudson

A labor of love of owners William Kirby Farmer and Kristan Keck, this inn just got its finishing touches this past spring. The 1830s building has authentic features like wide-plank floors and exterior gas lights, but a mix of contemporary and rustic furnishings inside give it a chic, artsy vibe. Expect modern amenities galore (flat-screen TVs, keyless room entry) but also traditional comforts like gas stoves and clawfoot tubs.

The inn’s two floors include five suites and three individual rooms — each with its own identity. “Every headboard is different and every room is unique,” says Guest Manager Vanessa Jacobs. “Kristan and Kirby took a lot of time and effort in selecting furnishings.” The supercozy Abigail Suite, with its king-size bed, is almost always booked. But rest assured every space has its own quirky mix of furnishings, and they all come stocked with cushy bathrobes and herbal scented toiletries from 2 Note in town. Just down the block, the inn’s Annex offers two additional urban-style apartment suites with full kitchens.

Although it is in urban Hudson, this hostelry embraces the outdoors. You can take breakfast in a sunny courtyard. A second-floor coffee deck with lattice walls and hanging plants makes a pleasant refuge on a summer morning. There’s also a grassy alfresco “lobby” across the street where movies are screened on balmy nights.

When we arrived late and were feeling a little famished after a day out and about, it was so nice to raid the mini-fridge stocked with cute little vials of saké, Underwood wine in a can, and cheese-and-cracker snacks from local purveyor Talbott & Arding.

Eat: Southern-style dining is available right on the premises for lunch, brunch, and dinner, along with innovative cocktails. But for a change of pace, Relish — a gluten-free and vegan-friendly café serving house-made black bean burgers and killer egg salad sandwiches — is just steps away on South Front Street. Around the corner on Warren Street, Vico specializes in Tuscan-style food that you can enjoy in the restaurant’s romantic garden.

Do: Since so many guests arrive via Amtrak (the station is nearby), many explore the town on foot. Take a stroll down the block to Ferry Street and the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park. Or explore the many funky vintage, antiques, and lifestyle shops of Warren Street, the city’s main drag. We’re smitten with Les Indiennes, which offers hand-blocked textiles made using traditional Indian techniques; and Finch, where you’ll find ’60s Danish modern alongside contemporary furnishings. If you have a car (or, perhaps, a bicycle), Olana, Hudson River School painter Frederic Church’s Persian-style studio and estate, is minutes away. Set on 250 acres, it offers a network of carriage roads for hiking and biking. Greenport Conservation Area, a 10-minute car ride away, is another good bet, with five miles of trails and pretty Hudson River views.
