Zen Mother: Local Bloggers Help Each Other Find Peace in Parenting; Plus, Tips on How Improve Your Car’s Gas Mileage

A fellow columnist inspires us to find Zen PLUS: Green Living Tip of the Week: Maximizing your car’s gas mileage

One of my favorite things about the first of the month is picking up the new issue of one of the Valley’s local publications — though I only read two columns: the horoscopes and “Flowers Fall,” the parenting column by Bethany Saltman. A Zen Buddhist from the Woodstock area, Saltman writes about parenting (and Zen) in a way which is unique, insightful, thought-provoking, and just right on. So I was excited to find her article in Parents Magazine, “Lessons from a Zen Mommy,” in which she offers ways to apply Zen wisdom to parenting to make it a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling experience.

Everything she highlights is something I struggle with daily, from multitasking despite the feelings of inadequacy it breeds, to the importance of remembering to breathe. I encourage everyone to check out the article (I’ll link to it here once it’s online) and her blog for some righteous homegrown enlightenment.

Green Living Tip of the Week:
There are ways to maximize your gas mileage (thereby using less gas) without trading in your car for a hybrid. Accelerate slowly, brake for longer distances, and try to avoid too many stops or changes in speed (cruise control is your friend). It also helps to keep up on your maintenance: keep your tires inflated and change oil and air filters regularly.
