“A lot of people say that they feel like they are walking into a hotel,” says Lynn Bartolotta about the newly renovated All Sport in Fishkill. It’s easy to see why, starting with the expanded “grand lobby,” which comes complete with a long granite desk and the eye-catching “water wall.” In addition, there are two new serene spa rooms and a spiffy café serving up the likes of edamame and seared tofu teriyaki, but still — there is way too much going on at this longtime health club to actually confuse it with a place of rest.
First opened in 1979, All Sport has long been known for its friendly staff and extensive facilities (and, yes, for its 1980s décor). These included not only a full-service gym and basketball and racquetball courts, but an impressive outdoor park which is the envy of kids and kids-at-heart throughout the region. Three attractively arranged pools, all flanked by lounge chairs and within view of the tiki-style bar, make up the centerpiece, but there are also tennis courts, a pretty running path, a volleyball court, and lawns for your little ones to run on to their hearts’ content.
Also new are Pilates and cycle studios, the latter with 38 bikes and a stage for the instructor. A 2,000-square-foot group exercise studio is scheduled to open sometime this spring. Classes are also being updated. Check out men’s yoga or bar fusion — an intriguing combination of ballet and yoga; the popular monthly Zumba parties (which are open to the public for $10) have moved to Saturday afternoons. Fencing, tai chi, dancing, boxing, martial arts, swim lessons, and kids and senior programs round out the offerings.
The Fuel Cafe, which is run by the owners of Hudson’s Ribs & Fish and is open to the public, offers a small menu of healthy items including freshly chopped salads, protein shakes, sandwiches, wild Alaskan salmon and grain-fed beef burgers (no fries though; this is a gym). Wine and beer is also served. “People sometimes have dinner there, although lunch is more popular,” says club spokesperson Bartolotta. “Sometimes when the chef cooks with garlic and oil the smell goes all around the club and you hear people saying, ‘Oh my God, we can’t be in a health club, it smells so good.’ ”
