For many people, going on vacation means traveling far from home, lounging poolside all day, and consuming decadent desserts and fancy cocktails. But participants in Destination Detox — a wellness vacation trip held in the Valley’s very own city of Hudson — have a very different experience.
The program is offered by Escape to Shape, a company that bills itself as a “traveling spa” and organizes wellness vacations to exotic locations like Istanbul and Belize. So why Hudson? “We fell in love with Hudson instantly,” declares Erica Gragg, one of the company’s cofounders. “It offers a perfect backdrop for the program — the mountains for hiking, farms for food sourcing, and the neighborhood feel.”
Destination Detox clients kick off their escape with a one-day juice cleanse; the rest of the week is spent exercising (there’s a daily three-hour hike), meditating, taking healthy cooking classes — as well as visiting Olana and antiquing on Warren Street. “It’s much more intense than our traditional escapes,” says Gragg. “Some people hit a slump on day three, but then feel amazing by day four. Massages every other day also help ease the ‘pain.’ ”
The goal of the weeklong retreat is not necessarily to lose weight, Gragg says, but to achieve overall mind, body, and spirit wellness. “Some people come to tone up, to train for a marathon, even a few to gain weight. Ultimately we want them to apply the healthy habits learned here to their lives back home.”
Eight sessions are offered between May and October, and each one is limited to 12 participants. Guests stay at the Inn at Ca’Mea — although they are not encouraged to dine at the adjacent Ca’Mea restaurant, which is well-known for its authentic Italian fare; all portion-controlled meals are prepared by a nutrition specialist in a separate kitchen. There is also a “day campers” program for those who live nearby. Rates range from $2,300-$6,000. Visit www.escapetoshape.com/Hudson-New-York.html for more information.
