In summer 2016, the former Stone Ridge Inn, a Dutch Colonial stone mansion circa-1757, was transformed into the Hasbrouck House, a 22-bed boutique hotel, not only attracting tourists (especially the NYC hipster variety) on getaways to nearby Kingston, Woodstock, and Phoenicia, but becoming a destination in its own right.
Check in at the quaint front desk, and get a key on a hand-tooled leather fob. Climb the stairs (no elevator in the main house, though two other buildings offer ground-level stays) to beautifully cozy rooms, with daylight streaming in from white-curtained windows. Large beds are dressed with Italian Frette linens and plump pillows, inviting you to linger. Set the mood early by reserving time for an on-site couples massage. But the landscape is so pretty (even in the winter), you’ll want to wander through the orchard or down to the secluded pond.
If you’re hungry for dinner, Butterfield restaurant is on the ground floor of the main house (be sure to make reservations). Enjoy a cocktail at the adjacent bar before your sumptuous meal (with omnivore and vegan choices) in the wood-paneled dining room with an inviting fireplace.
After dinner, challenge each other to board games in the club room, or make your way downstairs to the stone-walled basement, where you’ll find pool tables and arcade games. Of course, you could just return to your room (some rooms have big tubs for soaking á deux, or huge marble showers; all feature Kiehl bath products and toasty radiant-heat floors).
