Glass Half Full

Celebrate spring with these fragile but functional pieces

It was a long, snowy winter, but spring has finally sprung and now is the ideal time to freshen up your home. While you may not want to commit the time, energy, and money to a major renovation, you may be pleased to know that a single well-placed piece can transform a room — especially when it is a carefully crafted piece of glass.

Strolling through the attractive showroom of Hudson Beach Glass in Beacon should give you plenty of ideas: from soap dishes to sushi trays, bowls to bottles. “What we make is functional glass,” says co-owner John Gilvey, who has been making a living as a glassblower since 1977 after graduating from the School of Visual Arts. “Yes, we’re all trained as artists and our pieces are meant to be displayed, but almost everything we make is useful.”

Not to mention, mind-blowingly beautiful. In fact, the most difficult part of picking out a piece will surely be choosing a color. And to really appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating this gorgeous glass, stop by the showroom where you can often check out a glassblowing display right on the premises. Let the sun shine in!
