For the first time in a history that spans 200-plus years, West Point has appointed a female dean.
In a ceremony held today, Col. Cindy Jebb, a professor and head of the U.S. Military Academy’s Department of Social Sciences since 2013, was sworn in as Dean of the Academic Board. She was also appointed to brigadier general during a ceremony presided by Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen, the academy’s 59th superintendent.
Jebb, who graduated from West Point in 1982, will replace Brig. Gen. Tim Trainor after he retires this coming June. Trainor expressed in a statement that he is “extremely happy” regarding Jebb’s appointment, and is confident in her ability to succeed.
“She has a wealth of experience, and a breadth and depth of perspective on the needs of the Army and on higher education,” says Trainor.
Jebb attended Duke University, where she received a Master of Arts in Political Science and Ph.D. in Political Science. Additionally, Jebb has a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. President Obama nominated Jebb for the position back in April.
