With its beautiful array of locally crafted products and uber-popular Hudson Naturals skincare line, Newburgh’s Field Trip is definitely worth a trip.

Grace Sanchez believes shopping small should be a special experience. From enjoying sights, scents, and sounds to cultivating community connections, visiting a local store has an opportunity to spark joy. So, it’s no surprise that her lovely shop Field Trip, in the historic district of Newburgh’s Liberty Street, is indeed a joy.

Just steps away from Hasbrouck House, Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, Field Trip is chockful of high-quality, hand-crafted goods from all over the Hudson Valley including confections from Fruition, Trade Street jams, CoPar Avion teas, and much more. The store is also the flagship retailer and home of the plant-based skincare line Hudson Naturals.

Sanchez credits her son Nicholas, an architectural designer and co-owner of local firm Terotti, for letting her know that the store and skincare line were for sale. Sanchez, who hails from Los Angeles but has a home in Newburgh, was already enamored by the Hudson Naturals line. She bought Field Trip and Hudson Naturals in September 2021 and is intent on carrying out former owner Christina Silvestri’s legacy and vision. “My mission remains rooted in local love, from showcasing Hudson Valley products to being a vital part of the community,” says Sanchez.

To better understand the Hudson Naturals line, it’s crucial to note that all products are made in-house and from scratch. Product Specialist Fernando Arce is the expert behind all the soaps, lotions, candles, scrubs, face oils, and hand sanitizers. Incorporating local and sustainable plant oils, extracts, butters, waxes, and botanicals is fundamental to the team’s philosophy. For example, natural avocado oil is the primary base of many of the products due to its many health benefits both for inside the body and for skin. Hudson Naturals has 125 retailers, including nearby Newburgh Vintage Emporium, and hotels such as Mohonk Mountain House and Foxfire Mountain House. Grace’s favorite from the line? “I would have to say Hudson Natural’s Body Butter. It’s what hooked me from the beginning and a main reason I’m here today.”

With community being a large part of her store ethos, Sanchez collaborates with several neighboring businesses. In fact, there are so many female-owned shops on her street that Sanchez says they unofficially call themselves the “Ladies of Liberty.” But her neighbors aren’t the only reasons Sanchez loves the area. Right around the corner on Clark Street is Heart & Soil Flowers, her daughter-in-law’s boutique flower studio. Sanchez now has the pleasure of pop-in visits and has collaborated with Heart & Soil for special classes, like wreath making.

Thanks to a beautiful basement space with access to a backyard garden, Field Trip has plans to host events, like an herbal class led by in-house herbalist Sasha Geerken. Sanchez is looking forward to continuing to find innovative ways to appeal to her customers and the greater community, whom she sees as an extension of her family.
